The word Garnet derives from the name in middle english Gernet meaning “dark red” and the word “Granatus'' in latin meaning grain or seed, in reference to its resemblance to a Pomegranate. Traditionally the Garnet group of minerals is composed of 6 sub-minerals: Almandine, Pyrope, Spessartine, Andradite, Grossular, and Uvaroite. Deposits of Garnet can be found all over the world with large specimens coming out of Connecticut in the United States.

The meaning of red onyx is strength, courage, protection where there is some link to root chakra, which will help in grounding yourself to the earth. Red onyx is also associated with providing solutions to issues; it is said to have features that assist in making correct decisions.
