Every morning, I walk the heath.

Early. Quiet. The light still deciding what kind of day it will be.

And every morning, he was there, a small robin, waiting as though we had an appointment.

I didn't plan it. I never do. One day he simply appeared, bright-eyed and unafraid, and I stopped to look. The next morning he was there again. Then the next. We fell into a rhythm, the two of us, the way friendships form without anyone naming them.

So I began to bring him food.

A small offering. A small ritual. He would come closer each time, until he was almost at my feet, head tilted, watching me with that fierce, tender curiosity only robins have. Some mornings it was the best conversation I had all day, and neither of us said a word.

Then one morning, he wasn't there.

I waited. I walked the path twice. I called softly into the hedges. Nothing. And I understood, the way you understand these things, that he was gone.

But I had photographs. Dozens of them. His red breast, his black eye, the exact angle of his head when he looked at me. I could not bear to let him become only a memory.

So I made him permanent.

I had him cast, every feather and the lift of his small chest, so that he could stay close to me always. A robin, held in metal. Not a goodbye, but a way of keeping.

I never saw him again.

And yet — robins find me. Everywhere I go. In gardens, on fence posts, on the path ahead. They come close, unhurried, as if they know me. Robins are friendly birds, they say. Perhaps that's all it is.

But I don't believe it is.

I believe robins are messengers. Old tradition says that when a robin appears, someone who has passed is near. A greeting from the other side. A quiet I'm still here.

I think of my small friend on the heath, and I think: he never left. He only changed the way he arrives.

So when a robin comes to you, stop. Be still. Listen.

It may be carrying more than a song.
