Peridot does not borrow its colour from anywhere else. It is the only gemstone that forms in a single hue — a green pulled straight from the earth's mantle, from magma cooled and pressed into crystal. No layering, no treatment, no second stone lending its shade. What you see is what the stone has always been.
The ancient Egyptians called peridot the gem of the sun, and mined it by torchlight on the volcanic island of Zabargad, so the daylight glare wouldn't wash out its glow. They believed it protected against night terrors, dispelled dark thought, and let clarity in where confusion had settled.
Peridot is August's birthstone — arriving in high summer, when the light is longest and the year feels most awake. Worn close to the skin, it was said to soften anger and open the wearer to their own emotional truth.
